6pdr Naval Gunnade
Here we have a magnificent 6pdr muzzle loading Gunnade, on a brand new, handmade oak naval carriage. Gunnades were a natural evolution of the earlier Carronade design, whereby a heavy caliber long gun could be replaced with a short, thinner walled gun, taking up less deck space, weight, and need for crew numbers.
These pieces beneffited from a machined bore, as opposed to the usual core cast bores of the era, this facilititates less 'windage' between the ball and bore - allowing for a smaller powder charge to be used in maintaining an adequite muzzle velocity, and thus striking force.
This gun is believed to be a commerically cast piece, which was likely pressed into use aboard a merchant navy vessel. The bore size is 3.75 inches, and is clear all the way to the breech, with a clear vent, free from erosion. Atop the barrel is a cast crown, above the lettering "F E & S" - which are believed to be initials relating to the manufacturer or client of the ordnance piece.
The mount has been made in a period correct fashion for a naval truck carriage, and is made entirely of oak, with forged steel/iron fittings, an adjustable quoin, and hinged cap squares. The carriage is fully dismantleable, with bolts only - no screws or nails.
With a barrel length of 118cm, and total length of 147cm/width of 91cm, this piece is ideally sized for garden or renactment display, or possibly even indoor display with strong floors.
A truly beutiful piece, not often seen available for commerical sale.
