.59 British Sea Service Pistol

.59 British Sea Service Pistol

An iconic and rare .69 Caliber British Royal Navy sea service pistol.

This pistol bears an unusual barrel length of 10", which was possibly manufactured this way as a transition (possibly experimental) between the 12" long sea service model, and the P1805 9" short sea service pistol. A number of older 12" pistols were shortened by the time of the Napoleonic wars, to supplement the supply of newer 9" models. The belt loop has the addition of an anti-rotation screw, which is also consistent with P1805 type modification.

Aesthetically, this pistol shares all lineage with the 12" long sea service pistol, bit to the position of it's ram rod thimble, and Hickory ram rod.

The barrel bears faint British crown and scepter proof marks to the top of the barrel, with a GR over crown stamp to the wood, and inverted broad arrow stamps (indicating sold out of service).

The lockplate is tower marked, with a GR/crown cypher.

The wrist of the stock has a faint mark of "A" over "BO", possibly relating to a vessel or usage.

The wood and brass furniture are in very good condition for the age, the barrel has old surface pitting. The action holds well at full and half cock, with good springs.

All in all, an increasingly rare opportunity to own a piece of boarding weaponary from the golden age of sail.
